Raqchi — The Temple of Wiracocha
A single colossal wall of stone and adobe rises from the plain on the old road south from Cusco.
Where it is
PracticalRaqchi lies in the district of San Pedro de Cacha, in the province of Canchis, roughly between Cusco and the high plains that lead toward Lake Titicaca. It sits beside the Vilcanota river, at around 3,400 metres, on a route that has connected the Cusco valley with the southern Andes for centuries.
What is established
Archaeological evidenceThe complex is Inca. Its centrepiece is a long central wall, frequently described as about 90 metres long and well over ten metres high, built with a finely fitted stone base and a tall adobe upper section. Columns once ran along either side, and the whole structure is understood to have supported one of the largest roofed buildings of the Inca world.
Around it stand dozens of circular stone storehouses (qollqa), along with residential compounds, water channels and walls. Spanish-era chroniclers associated the site with the creator deity Wiracocha, and the name 'Temple of Wiracocha' comes from that tradition.
What makes it remarkable
Few Inca buildings still show their full height in adobe. Standing beneath the wall, you get a rare sense of the vertical scale of Inca architecture, not just its foundations. The rows of round storehouses also make the logistics of the state visible in a way that is easy to overlook at more famous sites.
Stories and traditional accounts
Traditional & historical accountsColonial-era accounts connect the place with Wiracocha and with a volcanic landscape nearby — the lava fields of the Quimsachata volcano are visible from the site. How far those accounts reflect earlier local belief, and how far they were shaped by Spanish writers, is still discussed.
Open questions
Researchers continue to debate exactly how the great hall was roofed, how the space was used in ceremony and administration, and how Raqchi functioned within the wider network of Inca roads and waystations.
Preparing to visit
PracticalRaqchi is commonly visited as a stop on the road between Cusco and Puno. Altitude is significant; give yourself time to acclimatise in Cusco first. Practical details on this page are an early draft. Check opening hours, entry tickets, road conditions and local guidance before you travel.
