Waqrapukara — The Fortress in the Clouds

Walls built onto two horn-shaped pinnacles, high above the Apurímac canyon.

Where it is

Practical

Waqrapukara is in the province of Acomayo, south of Cusco, on a rocky outcrop above the Apurímac canyon at around 4,000 metres or more.

What is established

Archaeological evidence

The name is usually translated from Quechua as 'horn fortress', after the two rock pinnacles at its core. Its architecture includes terraces, enclosures and double-jamb doorways typical of high-status Inca buildings, built onto and around the natural rock. Some researchers suggest earlier occupation by local groups before the Inca.

Questions worth asking

Was it a fortress, a shrine, or both? Its dramatic position and the care given to its doorways suggest ceremonial importance, while its defensive setting suggests other roles. Published research on the site is still limited.
