Huchuy Qosqo — The Little Royal Estate

Stone and adobe halls on a high shelf above the Sacred Valley, reached by old footpaths.

Where it is

Practical

Huchuy Qosqo ('little Cusco' in Quechua) sits on a plateau above the town of Lamay in the Sacred Valley, at around 3,600 metres.

What is established

Archaeological evidence

Chroniclers linked the site to the Inca ruler Wiracocha, and it is generally interpreted as a royal estate. It features terraces, a great hall (kallanka), and buildings with stone foundations and adobe upper walls — a combination that survives here unusually well.

Routes and landscape

The site is part of a network of paths linking the high country above Cusco with the valley floor, and walking those paths is itself part of understanding it.

Getting there

Practical

There is no road to the ruins; visitors walk in, either with a steep climb from the valley or on a longer route across the high country. Practical details on this page are an early draft. Check opening hours, entry tickets, road conditions and local guidance before you travel.
